Game refinery, and the tools to use for data

Our lecturer was Erno Kiiski, Chief Game Analyst of Game Refinery, a company that focuses on mobile game analytics, predictive analytics and mobile game market data.

This talk has made me feel so stupid. I am having a hard time concentrating on the subject, and I don't think it is the fault of the speaker, but mine. I think this is going to be a short lecture diary from me, as I don't know what to say about this subject. I am uncertain if I will add more to this.

Me, being scared of this all

From what I gathered from this is lesson is that there are companies like Game Refinery, that has a comprehensive market database, which helps creating a new mobile game or to improve your current mobile game. This data will help to market your game with targeted advertisement, you'll know who to give ads to.

They have different data and different subgenres so it is easy to see what you competitors do in your genre and even what other people are doing in different genres. It is good to see what people have been successful in and what they haven't tried so much of, to see these market opportunies.

The point is that you should understand your market if you want to succeed. It is weirdly enough good situation to be in, as there is already so much data you can see, but then there is the difficulty of standing out. Innovation is important here, and experimenting with different game mechanics and styles. I understand that is similar matter as I wrote before, but I feel like it is a big part of creating F2P mobile games.

For further breaking down of this, these market databases help you see what kind of games are trending, which will help you choose your genre(s) of your game. When you know what kind of game you want to work on, you'll need to think your target audience. With these you can see what kind of art style you should use for your game, for example if your target audience is mainly from Japan, you should use manga style to attract your audience.

Studying your player profiles will help you with what needs to be included in the game.
